The Power of a Male Boudoir Session

Many people don't realize the power of a male boudoir photography session. It's not like your typical portrait session where you get your picture taken, upload it on a few social media platforms, and call it good. Male boudoir has the power to change the way you see yourself, and here's why:

1) Male boudoir can help improve your self-esteem.

Male boudoir is incredibly powerful because it allows you to be vulnerable in a safe environment. It is an opportunity to let your walls down, connect with yourself, and truly appreciate your body. One of the first questions I ask clients before doing a male boudoir photography session with them is this: What are you most insecure about in regards to your body? This opens the door for a discussion on why you are ashamed about parts of your body and how I can showcase those parts the best way possible during your boudoir session.

A follow-up question for clients is: What parts of your body do you love the most? It is very important for me to ask this question because I want my clients to start thinking, before their photoshoot, about the positive aspects of their bodies. Humans tend to focus on the negatives too much, but the whole purpose of a male boudoir photo shoot is to focus on the positive. I want you to acknowledge your body as a whole: the good and the bad, and to accept all of it. I have had several clients tell me after their male boudoir session that they never thought they could look so good in front of the camera, despite all the insecurities they have about their body and self-image.

2) Male Boudoir can help heal past trauma.

I had a therapist one time say the following: "Trauma is the gift that keeps on giving." That thought stuck with me for quite some time because it's unfortunately true. Trauma can set off a lot of triggers in your body and your brain at various points in your life. It is often difficult to manage. Whether you have experienced sexual, emotional, or even religious trauma (for example, body shaming and sex-shaming), then doing a male boudoir session can help you.

Although I do not claim to be a therapist, I believe that seeing yourself through the camera in a different light can help you learn to love yourself, your body, and your self-image. I share a bit about my past trauma and the healing power of male boudoir in my about section here. Learning to see yourself different takes time, effort, and a lot of self-love. Male boudoir helps empower you in ways you have not been able to before. You may look in the mirror and see yourself and think, "God, I don't look that great," or "I really don't like seeing myself," or even, "I'm not good enough." I've been there, I understand. That's why male boudoir lets you step out of that mindset and create something for yourself, a safe space where you can express yourself. It allows you to appreciate who you are and showcase that through beautiful portraits that show you are healing from your past and learning to move forward.

If you are like me and have been afraid to showcase your body, then doing a boudoir session will help get you in front of the camera, face your fears, and empower you to be confident in your skin. Don't let your past dictate your future. You can overcome trauma and sexual shame by seeing yourself in a new light.

3) Male Boudoir allows you to focus on yourself for a change.

I'm sure you are like most people, jumping into several different roles throughout the day. You might be a father in the morning, helping kids get off to school, and then an employee at a 9 to 5 job, doing paperwork and figuring out how to satisfy customer needs, and then a husband or boyfriend after work, caring for another individual. It can oftentimes be exhausting to play so many roles throughout the day, spending a lot of energy everywhere else, except for yourself.

A male boudoir photography session is one of those rare moments where you get to focus on yourself. It's a chance to appreciate your body and self-image, and not worry about everyone else. During the session, I want it to be all about you. I want to showcase you the best way possible and listen to your ideas and feedback during the session, catering to your needs and wants. It's time for you to say, "this two-hour session is all about me, and I'm taking care of myself for a change."

After all, if you don't take care of yourself first, how do you expect to take care of anyone else in your life? This is your opportunity to take care of yourself emotionally, connecting and appreciating yourself. There is no negative talk, comments, or shaming during your male boudoir session. It is all positive, and might I add, fun!

So if you are on the fence about doing a male boudoir session, consider the benefits of a better self-image, healing from past traumatic experiences, and if anything, the ability to focus on yourself for once.
